Reality...

Today, in my sociology class we discussed something thought peaked my interest. We discussed that our reality is based on what interactions we have made in our lives. Now keep in mind, I personally havent had many experiences outside of New York, I've spent some time as a kid in the Dominican Republic, and I moved to North Carolina for a year when i was 12. With that being said, my knowledge of "outside endeavours" in the world are slim to none. I dont really watch the news or use the internet for anything but simple personal quick things like checking my email or going on facebook, so when i heard of the "Koney2012" situation i didnt even know what a "kony" was. Then i saw the film. Now im not going to go into details about the approximately 29 minute video, I'll leave a link at the end of this blog for that. My reason or bringing the "Koney2012" situation up is the fact that it was NOT a part of my reality until yesterday.

Joseph Koney has been doing this for about 20 years, and the first time i heard of him was yesterday. Thats crazy. In a world where all you have to do to get information is Google it, i didnt know of this man and his horrific crimes until yesterday. My "reality" were thing that took place in New York, like Jeremy Lin and the Knicks, and how the Yankees lost 3 pre season games in a row. THIS is my reality, and  i think back and it has a lot to do with what ive been around my whole life. Sports has been a big part of my life and politics, and world news has never been. This is what i learned in class. That we make our own reality with the intereaction we have with the people, things, and experiences in our lives and that we, as individuals, are in a way, ignorant, to the reality of other people unless we make the effort to learn and interact with other cultures in society, and learn about their different realities.

As promised here is the link of the mentioned video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc
